Mental Health Counseling: Fieldwork Placement

Position Overview

MNTL Health Psychotherapy Group offers a structured fieldwork placement for graduate students in Mental Health Counseling programs seeking to complete required internship or practicum hours in accordance with New York State licensure standards.

This placement is designed to meet educational requirements outlined by the New York State Office of the Professions for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor, including supervised clinical training, direct client contact, and professional development within an outpatient mental health setting.

Alignment with NYS Licensure Requirements

This internship is structured to support compliance with New York State requirements, including:

  • Completion of a supervised internship/practicum as part of a graduate program (minimum - 600 hours)

  • Exposure to core areas of practice including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotherapy

  • Supervision by a qualified NYS-licensed clinician (LMHC, LCSW, psychologist, physician, etc.)

  • Ongoing supervision that includes case review, clinical guidance, and evaluation of treatment interventions

Note: Internship hours are part of the educational requirement and are distinct from the 3,000 post-graduate supervised hours required for licensure

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual psychotherapy to clients under supervision

  • Conduct intake assessments and biopsychosocial evaluations

  • Develop treatment plans using evidence-based approaches

  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation

  • Participate in weekly supervision and case consultation

  • Adhere to ethical and legal standards, including HIPAA compliance

Supervision Structure (NYS-Compliant)

  • Supervision provided by a qualified, licensed NYS clinician

  • Minimum of weekly supervision (individual and/or group) focused on:

    • Case conceptualization

    • Assessment and diagnosis

    • Treatment planning and interventions

  • Supervisor provides ongoing oversight and is responsible for clinical services delivered

Clinical Training Experience

Interns will gain experience in:

  • Individual psychotherapy (adult population)

  • Evidence-based modalities (e.g., CBT, psychodynamic, integrative approaches)

  • Documentation aligned with medical necessity and insurance standards

  • Ethical decision-making and professional identity development

  • Exposure to private practice operations

Setting Requirements (NYS-Aligned)

This internship is conducted in a setting consistent with NYS standards:

  • Services are provided within a legally authorized mental health practice setting

  • Clinical services are delivered under appropriate supervision and oversight

  • The practice maintains responsibility for all services rendered

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a Master’s program in Mental Health Counseling or related field

  • Eligible for internship/practicum per academic program requirements

  • Commitment to ethical practice, clinical growth, and professionalism

This internship is designed as an advanced clinical training experience and involves direct client care early in the placement. As a result, applicants should have completed foundational coursework and clinical skills training prior to beginning the internship.

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate prior experience or training in areas such as:

  • Clinical interviewing and rapport building

  • Counseling skills and therapeutic communication

  • Mental health assessment and case conceptualization

  • Documentation and clinical writing

  • Crisis assessment and risk management

  • Experience in mental health, healthcare, social service, or related settings

Because this placement is clinically intensive, applicants should be prepared to assume responsibility for a psychotherapy caseload under supervision and engage in ongoing case formulation, treatment planning, and clinical documentation.

While prior clinical or helping-profession experience is preferred, all applicants will be evaluated based on their academic preparation, demonstrated clinical readiness, professionalism, and ability to succeed in a fast-paced outpatient mental health setting.
